MANILA, Philippines – As if to punctuate his excitement for a fresh start, basketball talent Japeth Aguilar turned to Twitter to air his thoughts and voice his thanks on the day of his first game with his new team, on Friday, February 8.

Aguilar, who is back in the Philippines after a failed NBA bid, was traded to Globalport from Talk ‘N Text (TNT). Since his return, he has been publicly lectured by his former TNT coach and Smart-Gilas head coach Chot Reyes on Twitter, and has been rumored to possibly be traded to Brgy Ginebra.

Globalport has since promised it would keep Aguilar. Aguilar has also been included in Reyes’ 17-man roster of the Philippine national team playing in the FIBA Asia Championship. This, despite Aguilar’s father slamming Reyes’ decision to dress down his son on the social media site.

But after the dust had settled, the younger Aguilar, who has been relatively silent since his return, took to Twitter to finally speak up.

Aguilar started his message with a simple tweet, highlighting his excitement for a new opportunity.

“Today is the day that I step out wearing a different jersey. New conference, new team, new challenges. New day to prove and put some work in,” he tweeted through his Twitter account, @japethaguilar35.

He went on to thank Reyes for “molding me not only as a player but as a person,” as well as his former TNT teammates Jared Dillinger, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jimmy Alapag, Ali Peek, Kelly Williams, and Larry Fonacier for their support.

He also expressed his gratitude to his former coaches, management staff and TNT fans.

Aguilar also took the chance to defend his father, after veteran sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz jumped into a conversation between Reyes and Aguilar.

Nathanielsz implied in his tweet that Reyes’ shortcomings were because of his father’s involvement, which Aguilar quickly denied.
