MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University turned back an upstart University of the Philippines side, 67-59, in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Thursday, August 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

After starting off with an 8-3 run, the Blue Eagles had to survive a scary first quarter as the Fighting Maroons answered back and led the the reigning five-peat champs by 11 points early in the second quarter.

The Katipunan-based squad, however, shook the rust off from a two-week break as they turned the heat on in the last two quarters and buried UP behind contributions from virtually everyone to score their 4th win in 8 games.

“I don’t think I’ll be honest if I say I was satisfied with the way we won this game. I think we could have done better,” Ateneo coach Bo Perasol said after the game.

Kiefer Ravena led the way for the Eagles with 14 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals while Juami Tiongson and Chris Newsome pitched in 11 apiece.

On the other hand, the Maroons slid to their 8th straight loss and stayed at the UAAP cellar despite Sam Marata’s 15 point-performance today. – Rappler.com
