Letran downs archrival San Beda to take #1

Letran beats archrival San Beda to take the top spot in NCAA Season 89.

MANILA, Philippines — Colegio de San Juan de Letran waxed hot early and held fort late to thwart archrival San Beda College, 74-67, in the 89th NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, August 24 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Leading MVP candidate Raymund Almazan started off the fireworks while rookie Ford Ruaya came through with clutch baskets as the Knights finished the first round on top with an 8-1 record before a wild and roaring crowd at the venue.

Almazan posted 22 points while Ruaya finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds for Letran, who zoomed to a 29-11 lead in the opening quarter but had to weather a fightback by the reigning champions to book the win.

Ola Adeogun led the Red Lions with 27 points but he couldn’t stop the Knights from beating them in the elimination round for the first time since 2007.

San Beda dropped to second with a 7-2 card. – Rappler.com
