MANILA, Philippines — National University displayed composure in foiling a physical University of the East side, 81-73, in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, August 31 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the Red Warriors employing bruising defense on the Bulldogs, the wards of coach Eric Altamirano stood their ground to down the undermanned UE crew and earn their fifth straight win.
The victory pushed NU into a tie for first place with idle Far Eastern University with an 8-3 record.
Meanwhile, the Warriors fell to their second consecutive loss to fall to 5-5.
Despite playing without key players Charles Mammie and Lord Casajeros, UE was able to keep pace with the Bulldogs for most of the game, before the Sampaloc-based squad uncorked a 7-0 run led by Jean Mbe to build a 66-57 lead with 5:03 left.
Mbe led NU with 18 points and 11 rebounds while two-time MVP Ray Parks chipped in 18 markers and 10 boards for the Bulldogs, who have not lost in the second round yet.
Roi Sumang was injured after a bad fall in the second quarter but returned for the Warriors to post 10 points on 3 of 15 shooting. – Rappler.com
