MANILA, Philippines — Students from the University of the Philippines showed their support for the UP Pep Squad, braving heavy rains, falling in line and spending the night outside the College of Human Kinetics Gymnasium, Tuesday, September 10, to avail tickets for the upcoming UAAP Cheerdance Competition this weekend.

Tickets were released Wednesday morning, September 11.

Worth it

“For me worth it naman ang pagpila kasi alam ko lahat ng preparations na ginagawa ng pep. Kaya kapag nakakuha kami ng ticket, it will all be worth it,” said first year Journalism student Minette Geñorga.

Geñorga was first in line and arrived as early as 8 in the evening. According to her, she has been a fan of the UP Pep Squad since high school and now that she is an iskolar ng bayan, the freshman doesn’t want to waste the chance of watching them live.

“Taga province po kasi ako kaya ngayon, gusto ko namang mapanood ng live,” said the Albay native. “Sa TV lang ako nakakapanood dati.”

When asked by Rappler if she thinks the defending champions will win their 4th straight crown, she answered with a confident smile: “I trust them.

Yearly tradition

Every year, the chance of getting a ticket for the CDC has always been some sort of a hunger game. And although lining up as early as Tuesday night will only assure one student with one ticket, Edmer Maguan still brought newspapers to sit on and probably sleep in only not to break his tradition.

“I really want to watch the cheerdance and I know tickets are hard to get,” Maguan told Rappler why he was willing to fall in line early. “Also, naging tradition na kasi. I’ve watched it for the past 2 years, so ayaw ko naman ma-break ‘yung tradition.”

The third year Communication Research student said he used to fall in line at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and avail tickets through his friends from other UAAP schools in the past years. This time though, he wants to secure a seat as early as possible.

“This year, I want to be sure that I get a ticket.”

“It’s no big deal for me (falling in line),” Maguan added.

One for UP

More than the breath-taking stunts and impressive routines of the squads, it is the parade of deep schol pride that will attract avid fans on Sunday, September 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“You feel that you belong in this community and we become one during that certain event. It’s a good feeling and I want that to feel that again especially during my last year,” said Kiel Lim who was one of the early comers.

Like Maguan, Lim doesn’t want to break the tradition of watching the Pep Squad live even if it meant sleeping on mats outdoors.

“I am willing to sleep here. Actually, this is my first time to do this and I think it’s worth the wait. Yung mapapanood naman namin, maibabalik lahat ng sacrifices that we had made,” the Broadcast Communication student shared with Rappler.

And even though the Fighting Maroons have lost all 13 of their games this season, UP students believe that a victory by the so-called Pep Squad ng Bayan will drown all their sorrows. – Rappler.com
