MANILA, Philippines – Ian Sangalang fired 8 straight points in the second overtime to help San Mig Coffee Mixers notch their first win, 92-83, over Air21 Express in the PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, December 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The second overall draft pick energized a Mixers rally in the second extension as he and Mark Barroca conspired in the final 5 minutes of the match to lead the Mixers out of the cellar.
Mark Pingris scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Ian Sangalang tallied 14 markers.
Joseph Yeo rattled home a big three to give the Express the 76-74 lead halfway in the first extra time. Mark Pingris then sank 2 free throws to knot the game at 76 apiece. Free throws by Barroca and Alex Mallari gave the Mixers a 79-76 edge with just 8.5 ticks left.
Trailing by 3 in the final moments of the first overtime, Air21 almost ran out of time before KG Canaleta was fouled while throwing a desperation shot from three-point land. He calmly sank all three free throws to force another extension.
In the second overtime, Ian Sangalang made his impact felt on both ends of the floor, scoring point after point and stopping Air21 on their tracks.
Air21 got off to a rousing 18-4 start with Vic Manuel, KG Canaleta, and Joseph Yeo all scoring 6 points each. Both teams exchanged runs afterwards with the Mixers playing catch-up most of the way. San Mig managed to chop down the deficit heading into the final stretch.
The Mixers then battled toe-to-toe to come from behind and secure their first victory. San Mig improved to 1-3 in the standings while Air21 dropped their 4th straight match in the conference. – with reports from Levi Verora/Rappler.com
