MANILA, Philippines – The Santiago sisters displayed fine form for National University as they demolished the gutsy University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Wednesday, January 8 at The Arena in San Juan.

Dindin and Jaja Santiago combined for 39 points as they towed the Lady Bulldogs to their third straight victory to occupy solo second spot in the standings at 5-1 almost halfway into the season.

NU exposed the Lady Maroons’ lack of firepower early on as they opened the game with a vicious 15-3 run. To make matters worse for the Diliman-based side, the Lady Bulldogs have been on-target with their services from the get-go.

The Lady Maroons spoiled NU’s early celebration however, as they detonated a 10-3 late first set bomb, led by the UP’s frontcourt cog Kath Bersola. Their efforts were not enough as Jaja Santiago closed the set for NU by 8 points, 25-17.

Spurred by their fantastic run in the first set, UP then took NU to a second set joust, answering each and every Lady Bulldog attack. Myla Pablo lifted the Sampaloc crew to a 15-10 advantage with timely attacks and steady composure.

Just as NU looked to pull away from the game, the Lady Maroons once again orchestrated a comeback, coming to within 2, 24-22, but the Lady Bulldogs put on just the right stops to secure the second set, 25-22.

The Lady Bulldogs then made short work of their foes in the third frame as they opened the set with a 9-3 rally, which eventually ballooned to a 12-point margin to take the game in straight sets, 25-14.

Dindin Santiago finished with 16 markers while her sibling contributed 13 for the Lady Bulldogs, who have overtaken Ateneo de Manila in the standings.

Meanwhile, Angeli Araneta high-scored 9 for UP as Bersola and Sheeka Espinosa ended up with 7 points apiece.

UP remains winless in 6 games so far this season while NU inches closer to league leaders De La Salle University, who are currently perched on top with 5 wins in as many matches. -Rappler.com
