LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—This year’s games will not just be about keeping yourself fit, but also about loving Mother Earth as well.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has launched a search for the cleanest and greenest delegation billeting quarter in the Palarong Pambansa 2012.

The department is further pushing efforts for an eco-friendly Palaro after the success of last year’s initiatives, Education secretary Armin Luistro said.

Criteria for judging include upkeep of the billeting quarters and the delegation’s serious compliance with environmental promotion.

According to the DepEd statement, part of the decision will also be based on the athletes’ behavior and the officials outside their quarters.

Judges designated by the National Technical Management and Administration Committee will randomly inspect the quarters. Winners will be announced on the last day of the Palaro.

Commitment to nature

The implementation of a clean and green Palaro started in last year’s national games held in Dapitan. This was part of the DepEd’s aim to promote environmentally-sound methods for resource conservation and environmental protection.

“The Palaro is a good avenue to instill among our youth the sense  of responsibility not only for  themselves but for the society as well,” Luistro said.

Region 4A or Calabarzon topped last year’s search and won “Cleanest and Greenest Billeting Quarter.”—Rappler.com
