MANILA, Philippines – The Alaska Aces maintained composure in the clutch to power past the San Miguel Beermen, 89-78, on Saturday, March 29 at a road game in Biñan Laguna for the 2014 PLDT Home TVolution PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The Commissioner’s Cup defending champions leaned on a thorough finishing kick anchored on a 13-0 finale to even out their win-loss record at 3-3, right smack in the middle of the standings, and come out with their first back-to-back wins of the conference.

Nearing the final two minutes of the game, Cyrus Baguio made good on a back-breaking triple to pull away from the Beermen and create some cushion that they would never relinquish, 84-78.

The Aces continued to pile up on endgame points from the stripe by RJ Jazul and Baguio after that as triples from Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter merely grazed the rim. San Miguel absorbed only its second loss in 7 outings, 5-2.

What started out to be a flat, low-scoring game, quickly turned into an intense and physical show for the fans.

Both squads could barely even reach double digits at the start of the game with the Beermen first to make it to 10 points at the 1:26 mark of the first on a dunk in transition.

Action picked up in the second with Alaska getting into the groove of their offense for a 37-32 halftime spread.

The Aces drew an impressive performance from their import Robert Dozier for a double-double of 20 points and 20 rebounds, to go with a remarkable 10-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.

Alaska will face Barako Bull next on Wednesday, April 2 while the Beermen take a long break before locking horns with San Mig Super Coffee on April 12. – Rappler.com
