MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University displayed grit and resilience all throughout the match to pull off a come-from-behind win over Ateneo de Manila University in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference on Sunday, March 30 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Down one set to two, the Lady Chiefs battled bit by bit before eking out a grueling 21-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-25-20, 15-13 win against the Lady Eagles.

Danna Henson and Christine Joy Rosario each tallied 14 points as the Lady Chiefs stayed unbeaten at 2-0 in Group A. Ateneo meanwhile, who committed a miserable 41 errors, dropped to 1-1.

“We are really glad. I think the game just favored us today. We prepared well especially on receiving and blocks,” said Arellano head coach Roberto Javier after the match.

Arellano and Ateneo traded bombs in the first four sets, with the UAAP champion taking the first and third sets while the NCAA runner-up capitalizing on opponent errors to bag sets two and four.

Open spiker Danna Henson opened the deciding set with powerful spikes as Arellano zoomed towards a 4-1 start. Ateneo miscues further widened the gap to 9-3, before the Lady Eagles tried to mount a giant comeback.

Kim Gequillana fired a service ace before Alyssa Valdez scored on back to back spikes to even the score at 11.

Amy Ahomiro then launched a quick hit from the middle to push the Katipunan crew ahead, 12-11. Henson tied it at 12 before a service error enabled Ateneo to go up, 13-12.

However, that proved to be their final stand as two straight errors – a net interference call and a Valdez spike that failed to go across – pushed Arellano at match point. Henson sealed the deal with a kill.

Alyssa Valdez scored 20 points to pace the Lady Eagles, who played without the services of Ella De Jesus.

Scores:

Arellano – Henson 14, Rosario 14, Sagun 9, Salamagos 7, Tubiera 6, Dela Cruz 6, Legacion 4, Sierra 2.

Ateneo – Valdez 20, Morente 15, Ahomiro 14, Gequillana 10, Patnongon 5, Sato 2, Morado 2, Tejada 1.

Set scores: 21-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-20, 15-13.
