'To the players of Gilas Pilipinas and the coaching staff, the Filipino people is united behind you,' Malacanang says

MANILA, Philippines – “In the face of overwhelming odds and challenges, the Philippines fought to the end and earned the admiration of the basketball world.”

A day after the inspiring performance of the Philippine men’s national basketball team against Croatia in the FIBA World Cup, Malacañang on Sunday, August 31, was all praises for Gilas Pilipinas – the underdog which pushed FIBA-ranked 16 Croatia to overtime and delivered a good fight before the European team prevailed, 81-78, in Seville, Spain.

In a statement, Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr praised Gilas Pilipinas for their performance, and said the Filipino people is united in backing the team.

“The President is one with the Filipino people in sending their congratulations for the display of skill and determination by the players of Gilas Pilipinas in their match against Croatia.”

“To the players of Gilas Pilipinas and the coaching staff, the Filipino people is united behind you, and we are one in prayer as you face the best basketball players from around the world. Let us shout our battlecry: ‘Laban Pilipinas! Puso!'”

President Benigno Aquino III previously said that the Philippines’ participation in the FIBA World Cup after 38 years was an arena to showcase the Filipinos’ talent to the world.

“The President added that heart, ambition, and the perseverance to achieve one’s ambitions will serve as Gilas Pilipinas’ strength for the next matches,” Coloma added.

Many had predicted an easy win for Croatia, but the Philippine team fought back bravely and made its presence known in the world scene.
