MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons easily took care of business against the University of the East Lady Maroons, winning their match in three sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16, on Wednesday, December 10, at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Katherine Bersola led the way for UP with 12 points and 4 blocks, while Angeli Araneta and Nicole Tiamzon pitched in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Maroons won the blocks battle, 8-3, outnumbered UE in terms of attack points, 39-25, and had more aces, 7-2.
University of the East was led by Shaya Adorador and Leuseht Dawis, who combined for 17 points.
The second set proved to be the tightest contest where UE was up 8-7 before letting UP build a 5-point lead and eventually holding off UE late despite an ankle injury hounding the play of Vina Alinas.
In the third set, the Lady Maroons raced off to an early 8-2 lead and never looked back en route to their victory.
UP improved to 2-3 while UE fell to 0-5. The Lady Warriors have lost their last 33 games dating back to two seasons ago.
The Lady Maroons will be back in action after the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament Christmas break on January 4 to take on the defending champion Ateneo Lady Eagles. Up next on UE’s schedule is the De La Salle Lady Spikers.
