Marcelo confident he can adjust easily at Ginebra under Lim
The 4-time NCAA champion is ready to be the trusted role player

MANILA, Philippines — Adjusting to life with crowd darlings Barangay Ginebra is not something former San Beda standout Dave Marcelo will be worrying about – even if he is taking on a supporting role.

The NCAA Season 87 Finals MVP is optimistic he can acclimate himself quickly to his new PBA team as he reunites with Frankie Lim, his former San Beda coach, with whom he won 4 championships.

A bit confident na ako kasi naging coach ko na siya before, I know his system so madali mag-adjust,” the 26-year old Marcelo said. (I’m a bit confident because he was my coach before, I know his system so it’s easier to adjust.)

Marcelo was part of a 4-team trade involving San Miguel Beer, Barako Bull, Globalport and Ginebra.

Acquiring Marcelo is part of Lim’s rebuilding process for the underperforming Gin Kings, which appointed Lim as head coach after a dismal Commissioner’s Cup.

This early, it’s been reported that Lim’s practices with Ginebra have been intense and even caused at least one player to puke, Marcelo confirmed. It’s this intense practice that Marcelo believes can only instill discipline in Ginebra.

Feeling ko magiging effective ngayon yung run and gun kasi lahat talaga ng player pinapatakbo niya, kahit big man pinapatakbo niya talaga,” shared Marcelo, adding that making everyone run is part of Lim’s mission to improve their endurance.

Makikita mo lalo yung disiplina now ng team.”

(I feel the run and gun will be effective now because he’s making all the players run, even the big man. You really see now the team’s discipline.)

Marcelo admitted Lim has yet to sit him down regarding his role in the team. But the 2012 12th overall pick is ready to be the trusted role player.

More on good screens siguro ako,” said the 6-foot-5 big man. “More on role player ako, hindi ako yung main player kasi marami nang scorer and rebounder, so maybe yung little things na lang gagawin ko.”

(I’m probably be more on good screens. More on a role player, I won’t be the main player because we have plenty of scorers and rebounders, so maybe I’ll just provide the litle things.)

The only hitch for Marcelo, however, is dealing with the pressure that comes from being under constant scrutiny by impatient Ginebra fans longing for a title.

Siyempre nung una pressured, alam naman natin yung fans ng Ginebra grabe lalo pag natatalo,” he said.

Pressured kasi alam ko kailangan ko mag-deliver para sa team tsaka mataas yung expectation nila sa akin. Pero ngayon medyo nawawala wala naman kasi magaan sila kasama and na-welcome nila ako kaagad.”

(Of course at first I was pressured, we know how Ginebra fans can get especially when the team loses. I was pressured because I know I must deliver for the team and they have high expectations of me. But now it’s subsided a little because they’re easy to be with and they welcomed me right away.)— Rappler.com
