Calabarzon spikers dethrone Central Visayas in elementary volleyball
'They’re very hard to beat and we’re both strong. But our hearts brought us here,' says Calabarzon team captain Tanya Narciso

TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Champions no more.

After 7 days of intense volleyball competition, Calabarzon (Region IV-A) elementary volley belles surpassed defending champs Central Visayas on Saturday, May 9, within 3 sets in the elementary girls volleyball event. The team scored 11-25, 25-7 in the first two sets and finally, ending the 3rd set scoring with a 25-20 victory.

The heart-pounding match took place inside the courts of Brgy. Magugpo North Gym, with loud howls from the audience cheering their support for the two teams.

Calabarzon’s team captain, Tanya Francesca Narciso, led her team to their battle grail to defeat the Central Visayas spikers by making way for her team’s outside-hitters to send blazing balls into their opponent’s court.

Watching on the sidelines, the winning team’s coach Imelda Mendoza said that in the first 2 sets, the Calabarzon girls had a slow start. But they kept up the championship in mind until the third set.

Dikdikan na talaga yung game. Konting error or hit, kahit ano pwedeng mangyari ,” she added. (The game is really getting a little gritty. Just one error or hit, anything can happen.)

Calabarzon asset Aliya Maluluan, who stands 5’9” on the volley court, paved her way through the game, contributing points and blocking every incoming ball with her towering height.

The Calabarzon spikers wouldn’t have gotten the gold medal without libero Beverly “Bem-bem”  San Juan who dug and chased powerful balls lashed out by Central Visayas.

The Visayan team strived to defend their title but failed to regain supremacy, landing only with a silver finish. Teary-eyed and broken from losing their crown, the CVRAA volleybelles still smiled and shook hands with Calabarzon.

Shiny gold medals were dangling from the necks of the winning team, with special awards, Calabarzon’s team captain, Tanya Narciso as Best Setter and MVP, Bembem San Juan as Best Libero, lady tower Aliya Maluluan as Best Blocker and their mentor Imelda Mendoza emerging as Best Coach.

“Mahirap po silang kalaban, pareho pong malakas pero sa puso po talaga ang nagdala sa amin. Pareho po kaming may talent pero ginabayan po talaga kami ni Lord at sa puso kami lumamang,” said team captain Narciso.

(They’re very hard to beat and we’re both strong. But our hearts brought us here. We both had talents but the Lord guided us throughout the game. Having heart really helped us edge them out.)  – Rappler.com
