MANILA, Philippines – Pinoy boxer Mark Barriga won his first fight of London 2012 in the men’s light flyweight division, allowing him to advance to the next round of 16.
The 19-year-old is widely considered as the country’s best bet for a medal.
Meanwhile, archer Rachel Anne Cabral was eliminated Tuesday, July 31 after losing her women’s individual 1/32 eliminations to Russia’s Ina Stepanova, 7-1.
Cabral scored a 22 in the first set to Stepanova’s 23, followed by 18, 25, and 23 in the following sets, compared to Stepanova’s 23, 23 and 27 respectively. Stepanova finished with a total score of 98, while Cabral totaled 87.
Cabral is the fourth Filipino who ended her Olympic campaign, along with swimmer Jessie Lacuna, weighltifter Hidilyn Diaz and shooter Brian Rosario who have all been eliminated from the Games.
