LONDON – Eight players involved in a match-fixing scandal at the Olympic badminton tournament have been disqualified, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Wednesday, August 1.

The eight players — four from South Korea, two from Indonesia and two from China — planned to appeal the decision, but that was also scrapped in the minutes leading up to the scheduled quarter-final start time.

“The appeals committee chairman rejected the cases… the decision of the disciplinary commission stands,” said BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund.

The players are accused of throwing matches, after they appear to miss shots on purpose, in an attempt to lose.

A loss in that stage means weaker opponents in the final eight, which would help them make the finals easier.

They were bood by the crowd in Wembley arena, while an umpire even warned players in one match to conduct their plays better.

The BWF found the players guilty of “not using one’s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport.”- with Agence-France Presse
