MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Alberto “AJ Lim” advanced to the next stage of the boys’ singles tournament of Wimbledon after defeating Jonathan Gray of Britain, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (11), on Tuesday, July 7. 

Lim, 16, is the lone representative of the Philippines in the prestigious juniors tournament.

Prior to beating Gray, the world no. 75-ranked Lim defeated Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of Spain, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, in the qualifying round and then defeated Yuya Ito of Japan, 1-6, 7-6, 13-11, to advance to the main draw.

Lim now advances to the Round of 32 in Wimbledon where he will take on the United States’ William Blumberg.  

Blumberg, 17, is coming off a victory over Djurabeck Karimov of Uzbekistan, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 64. 

Lim is also participating in the Round of 32 for the boys’ doubles tourney of Wimbledon, where he’s partnering up with Tung-lin Wu of Taiwan and will soon go up against Tim Sandkaulen of Germany and Mate Valkusz of Hungary. 

Lim’s last tournament prior to Wimbledon saw him eliminated by Karimov in the Round of 64 of the Nike Junior International Roehampton in Britain.

Filipino-American Treat Huey and his American teammate Scott Lipsky were ousted in round two of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon on Friday, July 3 Manila time.
