MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American fighter John Dodson will have his way as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) accedes to his request for a title rematch against Demetrious Johnson in the main event of UFC 191 on September 6 (September 5 in US).
The second encounter between two world-class flyweights, which takes place at the 16,800-seater MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was publicly confirmed during the live broadcast of UFC Fight Night 71.
After spending nearly a year on the sidelines due to an injury, Dodson (17-6) made a successful return to the Octagon by outpointing Zach Makovsky on the preliminary card of UFC 187 this past May 24.
Following two-straight stoppage victories over Darrell Montague and John Moraga, the 30-year-old standout from Albuquerque, New Mexico missed significant time in 2014 as he went under the knife to repair a torn meniscus as well as his anterior cruciate ligament.
On the other hand, Johnson (22-2-1) successfully defended his flyweight title for the sixth time by submitting Japanese contender Kyoji Horiguchi in the UFC 186 headliner last April.
The 28-year-old “Mighty Mouse” was in the Philippines last month to promote the UFC’s first Philippine live event.
Dodson challenged Johnson for the 125-pound division’s top prize in January 2013, but he suffered a unanimous decision setback.
Also announced for the UFC 191 fight card is a light heavyweight showdown between former title contender Anthony Johnson (19-5) and Jan Blachowicz (18-4). – Rappler.com
