CEBU CITY, Philippines – Donnie Nietes made the fifth – and possibly last – defense of his WBO junior flyweight championship on Saturday, November 15 against Carlos “Chapito” Velarde at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City, Philippines.
Nietes (33-1-4, 19 knockouts) has reigned as a world champion over two divisions since 2007 and must pass this test to eclipse the record of Gabriel “Flash” Elorde for longest-reigning Filipino champion. Velarde (26-3-1, 14 KOs) of Culiacan, Mexico will be trying to win a world title in his second opportunity.
