Pacquiao Watch: Yet another frustration
After getting everyone's hopes up, it appears there will be no Pacquiao-Mayweather fight this May. Columnist Edwin Espejo gives his take on the matter

Just as everybody thought it is going to happen, suddenly everybody is disappointed again.

When will the Pacquiao-Mayweather megafight conversation ever stop and cease to frustrate boxing fans?

I am not about to blame Top Rank’s Bob Arum although he can certainly make this fight of the lifetime happen if he just steps aside.

For one fight. One fight only.

But boxing is business and you do not have any business being there if you cannot make business.

Let me put it this way, I will make both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao responsible for adding up to the accumulating anxieties of boxing fans. With their stature as the world’s Top 2 best fighters in almost a decade, they certainly can will the fight to happen. Not stall it like the last 5 or 6 years.

But they are not. For one reason or another.

Pacquiao, for all his debt of gratitude, cannot cut that umbilical cord that binds him to boxing’s oldest Lord of the Ring. Those in the know, probably know better. Right Michael Koncz?

Floyd? Oh, Floyd. Your inordinate fear of Pacquiao is killing the sport and appetite of boxing fans.

Tell me you just want to equal and surpass Rocky Marciano’s record of 49 professional fights before retiring without suffering any loss. To hell with Manny for as long as you make empty history and your hollow boxing immortality.

Or are you just timing the Pacquiao fight to be your 49th and equal the great Marciano’s fight record?

Could be and Marquez believes he can do that with the help of other Lords of the Ring in Las Vegas. You know, it comes with the territory.

As Pacquiao said, Floyd has until the end of the month to sign the fight contract.

History says Floyd cannot be bullied that way into signing a fight contract. He makes the fight contract. That is how swell-headed and how big his ego is.

But there are two entities that can really make the fight happen.

They are the people responsible for showing the fight in our living rooms, in arenas, open spaces, theaters and wherever fight fans who cannot afford the plane ride, hotel room and gate price will find their place to watch.

Yes, the two networks that hold the contracts to beam the two boxers’ fights.

Showtime and HBO.

It happened before, there is no reason it cannot happen now. Come to think of it, the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight promises to become the biggest grossing fight in our lifetime and all lifetimes of long ago gone boxing fans.

Somebody will walk their way to the bank with the widest grin in his face if this fight happens.

That is why I am still confident it will happen. If not in November, in March next year.

Come to think of it, their “tune-up fights” in May against separate opponents are already blockbusters in the making.
