Charly Suarez aims to extend his knockout binge in the pro ranks to 5 when he tangles with veteran Jon Jon Estrada on February 13 at the Megamart Burgos, Poblacion Norte, Paniqui, Tarlac.
A three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, Suarez is favored to beat Estrada and resume his stalled climb in the super featherweight division.
The 32-year-old Suarez disposed of Dave Berlas in 3 rounds in his last fight on February 7, 2020, and hasn’t been in the ring since then because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though a bit younger at 31, Estrada is more experienced with an 11-7-1 slate, including 10 knockouts.
Pitted against unbeaten foes, Estrada lost two in a row in Russia before tasting another defeat to Koshin Takeshima in Japan, all via unanimous decisions.
After doing indivdiual training in Davao during the lockdown, Suarez is now deep in preparations with trainer/manager Delfin Boholstz in Manila.
An accomplished amateur, Suarez won the golds in the 2009 Vientiane SEA Games as a featherweight and the 2011 Jakarta SEAG as a lightweight and was a silver medalist in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
Suarez, who represented the country in the 2016 Rio Olympics, snared his third SEAG gold in 2019 in Manila when he was already a pro.
In his debut on January 16, 2019, Suarez stopped Ernesto Cagampang in 2 rounds. He returned with another 2nd round knockout of Justin Cabarles on March 5 before closing the year with a 1st round demolition of Virgil Puton on August 24.
Despite his sterling credentials, Suarez isn’t taking Estrada lightly, promising to give it all on fight night. – Rappler.com
