James Bacon targets a third straight knockout victory, while Al Rivera aims for an upset in his back-to-back bid

Filipino welterweights James Bacon and Al Rivera tackle separate opponents in different venues in the United States on Saturday, January 30 (Sunday, January 31, Philippine time).

Bacon seeks his third straight knockout victory against Argentine Ramon de la Cruz Sena at the Four Ambassadors Hotel in Miami, Florida, while Rivera battles two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California.

Recovering from a unanimous decision loss to Darragh Foley in Sydney, Australia, Bacon took two rounds each to knock out Carlos Dallera and Roque Agustin Junco, respectively, and raise his record to 25-4 with 17 knockouts.

Rivera, on the other hand, aims to make it back-to-back following his victory over Rodel Wenceslao last February 29 at the Lagao Gym in General Santos City.

Toting a 21-4 card with 18 knockouts, Rivera is tagged the heavy underdog against Barthelemy (27-1-1, with 14 knockouts) of Cuba.

Choosing to remain in Miami and train under Cuban coach Osmiri Fernandez rather than return to Cebu for the holidays, Bacon will be seeing action for the third time in 4 months.

The 30-year-old Bacon of Sanman Promotions is trying to compensate for the long boxing break he took from 2013 to 2018.

Bacon checked in at 143.8 pounds while Sena was also under the limit at 145 pounds.

The 27-year-old Rivera, the former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation light welterweight titlist, tipped the scales at 143.2 pounds, heavier than Barthelemy’s 142.8. – Rappler.com
