Jayson Mama’s world title challenge vs Mthalane gets canceled

Jayson Mama’s world title shot got shot without a fight.

The unbeaten Filipino arrived in Durban, South Africa, nearly 11,000 km away from his home in General Santos City, on Thursday, December 17, only to be informed his International Boxing Federation flyweight championship clash with Moruti Mthalane on Sunday, December 20, was canceled by Boxing South Africa (BSA).

In a media statement, the BSA announced the cancellation after “it became evident to the federation that the Promoter (Tono Promotions) has failed to meet basic requirements to enable BSA to sanction and give credibility to the event.”

The BSA made its decision on December 11 but announced the cancellation 5 days later, when Mama and trainer Ronerex Dalut are already in the country. 

Sanman Promotions head JC Manangquil lamented the development, saying the fight contract stipulated Mama won’t receive anything if ever a cancellation happens.

Other than his wards’ long, tiring travel, Manangquil rued Mama’s 3 months of training that went down the drain as there’s no information when the title duel will be moved, if ever.

Mama remains the mandatory challenger and Manangquil is hoping the Mthalane camp and Tono Promotions would renegotiate and set a new date.

According to Manangquil, Mama and Dalut will fly out of Durban on Friday. – Rappler.com
