LAS VEGAS, United States – Just two days before the fight of the century, Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach expressed some concerns over his boxer’s opponent, specifically, Floyd Mayweather Jr’s gloves.
Roach said they have not yet gotten the chance to examine Mayweather’s gloves because it has yet to be submitted to the Commissioner.
“Their gloves are handmade by Grant and our gloves are made by a computer system in Mexico….I just want to make sure the weight on the gloves is fair,” he told reporters on Thursday, April 30.
Roach also said he wants to know what the gloves are made of.
“His gloves haven’t showed up yet I want to know what they’re made of. Ours have horse hair and full foam….I’m concerned about what they’re made of. And they’re concerned with mine also so we’ve already tested mine but we haven’t had time to check his yet and I look forward to do that,” he said.
Mayweather has worn Grant gloves for all but one of his fights since 2006, while Pacquiao prefers to wear Cleto Reyes.
Gloves are an important part of a fight and are designed with a different purpose.
“The Grant is more protective to the puncher. The Reyes is purely for the man who wants destruction at all cost,” former lightweight world champion and now rising trainer Nate Campbell told Rappler.
The fight between Filipino superstar Pacquiao and the undefeated Mayweather is set to be the most lucrative in fight history. It is predicted to rake in at least $400 million and is expected to decide, once and for all, who the best pound for pound fighter is today. – Rappler.com
