PH boxing wants Eumir Marcial to join Thailand training camp

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) hopes Filipino pug Eumir Marcial can join the national team's training camp in Bangkok, Thailand.

Marcial, who's set to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has been training in the US since October 2020 with professional boxing coach Freddie Roach, who mentored the sport's lone eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

But with the Tokyo Games less than four months away, ABAP would want Marcial to focus on training for amateur boxing again.

"We’re trying to convince him to join the team. This is the Philippine team to the Olympics and it's better if he's with the team. The training here is for the Olympics," said ABAP secretary-general Picson on Tuesday, April 6, in the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum.

"But then again, we understand that he has commitments other than ABAP."

ABAP held a meeting with MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons and the latter discussed that the best scenario was for the national federation to send a boxing coach to the US.

However, the coach encountered visa problems, which was further complicated by the "NCR Plus" enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the country.

"We discussed it and they said that Eumir's Olympic training should be in the US with the coach that he requested, but that has hit the snag because of the visa issue, so we’re trying to untangle that," said Picson, who also reassured Marcial that he has enough sparring partners in the training camp.

The national boxing team members, including Olympic qualifiers Irish Magno, women's boxing world champion Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, are also slated to join the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in November.

Before that, ABAP also looks to send Philippine bets to the 2021 Asian Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India from May 21 to 31, but the country is currently dealing with a surge of COVID-19 cases.

As uncertainty continues to surround the situation of the Filipino pugs, ABAP is planning to let the team train abroad until the opening of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July.

Marcial and Magno booked their tickets to the Tokyo Olympics in the 2020 Asia-Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualifiers, while Petecio and Paalam earned their slots via the top Asian rankings. – Rappler.com
