WBC rankings: Pacquiao top contender to Mayweather

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao emerged the top contender for undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr as the Filipino fighter climbed to the number one spot in the latest World Boxing Council's (WBC) Welterweight division ranking.

Pacquiao's comeback win against Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios catapulted him to the number one spot behind WBC welterweight champion Mayweather.

The eight-division world champion displayed his superior boxing skill over the younger Rios. Pacquiao outboxed Rios in 12 rounds to earn him a unanimous decision win.

Mayweather's latest conquest came in September 2014 defeating Saul "Canelo" Alvarez via majority decision.

Megafight

The latest WBC Welterweight rankings fuels fire to the long-awaited but much delayed fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

There have been several obstacles to the actualization of the fight including steroid use-implications and splitting the fight's profit.

Pacquiao already agreed to take less money but his two losses in 2012 derailed the possibility of the two boxers meeting in the ring.

Freddie Roach, Pacquaio's trainer, said after the fight against Rios he sees Manny taking on a couple of fights before setting up a date with Mayweather.

"I think he'll have a couple more years in him but if the right fights come in the right order, I would say this one, rematch, Mayweather, done," said Roach. (WATCH: Pacquiao's road to redemption: The victory)

Pacquiao, in the press conference after the Rios fight, said he has no problems fighting Mayweather.

"My job is to fight. Anybody who will fight me, I can fight. I'm willing to fight Floyd, but it's up to him if he's willing also," said Pacquiao. - Rappler.com
