WNBA lashes out after Gilbert Arenas suggests they play in sexy outfits
Three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas reemerges in the public eye following an Instagram post of two women playing basketball while wearing thong underwear

LOS ANGELES, USA – The WNBA hit back at former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas on Wednesday after he suggested scanty uniforms would increase the appeal of the women’s pro basketball league.

“Gilbert Arenas’ comments are repugnant, utterly disrespectful and flat-out wrong,” spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement on behalf of the NBA and WNBA.

“WNBA players are strong, talented and determined individuals who give it their all on the court and serve as inspiring role models to millions around the world.

“They should be celebrated for their accomplishments, not disparaged with ignorant insults.”

Arenas, 33, was a 3-time NBA All-Star, but may best remembered for violating league rules on handguns.

He pleaded guilty to felony gun possession and was banned for most of the 2009-2010 season after an incident involving guns in the Washington Wizards locker room involving then-teammate Javaris Crittenton.

On Wednesday he posted photos on Instagram of women playing basketball in their underwear, urging the WNBA to adopt the look.

Arenas said in the accompanying post that this was what he expected when the women’s pro league opened in 1996, “not a bunch of chicks running around looking like, cast members” from the comedy show Orange Is the New Black.

Arenas add: “if u think this is sexist,9 times out of 10 u the ugly one and we didnt pay to come see u play anyway.” Rappler.com
