Mighty Sports wins Jones Cup opener over Chinese Taipei
MANILA, Philippines – Mighty Sports started their 36th William Jones Cup campaign with a victory over hometown team Chinese Taipei A, 89-81, on Sunday, July 24.
Representing the Philippines in the tournament, Mighty Sports nearly surrendered an 18-point second half lead before pulling away late and sealing the win with a clutch shot by Zach Graham, who finished with 12 points.
The team trailed big after one, 27-14, but turned things around in the second period by outscoring its opponents by 16. Mighty Sports then built its biggest lead in the third quarter before closing things out in the final frame.
Dewarick Spencer led the Philippine team with 27 points and nailed 5 shots from deep. Troy Gillenwater also played well with 19 points while former PBA import Hamady N'Diaye accounted for 13 points and 9 boards.
Former NBA player and PBA import Al Thornton struggled with only 5 points.
Mighty Sports will be back in action on Monday, July 25, against South Korea. – Rappler.com
