After 4 tries, the Fighting Maroons finally cruise to their first victory behind Paul Desiderio

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons finally entered the win column in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup after drubbing the winless National University (NU) Bulldogs, 73-57, on Friday, May 4, in San Juan.

The Maroons banked on a 17-4 run anchored on captain Paul Desiderio to build an 18-point cushion, 48-30, over the Bulldogs in the third quarter.

Fellow Gilas cadet Juan Gomez de Liano also poured in some buckets along with veteran stretch forward Gelo Vito to help the Maroons pick up their first triumph in 4 games.

Desiderio led the balanced UP attack with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Javi Gomez de Liano and Bright Akhuetie also chipped in 10 each for the Maroons.

John Clemente and John Galinato dropped 11 apiece to lead the Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers stayed hot and undefeated in their 96-83 rout of the University of Perpetual Help Altas.

Aljun Melecio dropped 27 points, highlighted by 7 more threes right after a 7-triple outing against Gilas Pilipinas.

Kiwi Taane Samuel took care of things down low with 19 points and 9 boards while Justine Baltazar had a 16-point, 12-rebound performance with 4 blocks.

On the other end, it was steady swingman Kim Aurin who paced the Perps with 21 points, 9 boards and 4 helpers.

Despite playing without captain Kib Montalbo, the UAAP Season 80 finalists emphatically secured the win with a 23-4 fourth quarter run on the heels of Melecio’s patented three-point streak.

Melecio unloaded 8 points in the decisive run bolstered by the bruising post shots of Samuel. With 28 seconds left, Andrei Caracut casually fired a near 30-footer to avoid a shot clock violation and still banked in the dagger.

In the earlier games, the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles blew out the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors by 22, 83-61, while the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs also ragdolled the reserve squad of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates, 93-76.

The Gilas Pilipinas cadets will see action again next Sunday, May 6, against UP.
