HIGHLIGHTS: Philippines vs Japan - Jones Cup 2019
MANILA, Philippines – In two games so far in the 41st William Jones Cup, Mighty Sports-Go for Gold Philippines has lived up to its moniker and flexed its might on those who have stood in its way.
Star imports Eugene Phelps and Renaldo Balkman were practically unstoppable as they led Mighty with 20 and 17 points, respectively, in another easy win.
While the imports showed off as expected, Mighty’s local crew did not rest on its laurels as Roosevelt Adams and Mikey Williams provided an offensive spark with a combined 20 markers off 6 total threes. Jeremiah Gray also added two long bombs for a total of 8 points.
Tiu and the rest of the Mighty coaching staff will be relieved to know that their wards can flat-out shoot as they head to their 3 pm match on Sunday, July 14 against sweet-shooting Japan, their third game in as many days.
Japan recently edged out national team Chinese Taipei Blue, 77-75, off Shuto Ando’s 20 points, 15 coming from beyond the arc.
As evidenced by their balanced scoring output, Mighty is not shy to pass the rock as many times as needed in order to create the best shot. With the imposing presence of Phelps, Balkman and Hamady N’Diaye lurking inside, the team’s snipers will have extra breathing room to knock down those triples.
Against Japan, they’ll need all the scoring they can get if ever their perimeter defense doesn’t hold well.
Which team will get its first loss this Sunday afternoon?
