HIGHLIGHTS: Philippines vs Canada - Jones Cup 2019
MANILA, Philippines – Mighty Sports-Go for Gold showed in its 94-59 walloping of Japan that it’s more than just an import’s team.
Fil-Am Mikey Williams proved that the locals are more than capable of shining on their own as he peppered Japan with 17 points spiked by a 3-of-5 shooting from downtown. ASEAN Basketball League mainstay and Fil-Am point guard Jason Brickman also had an all-around line of 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the easy win.
Of course, the imports still did the heavy lifting with Renaldo Balkman and Eugene Phelps combining for 46 points.
However, with Mighty playing its fourth game in as many days on Monday, July 15, head coach Charles Tiu may lean on his locals more this time around when they face college-based Canada, represented by the University of British Columbia, in the 3 pm match.
With import McKenzie Moore dealing with a left ankle sprain, Fil-Ams Williams, Brickman, Roosevelt Adams and Jeremiah Gray are more than capable to take on a heavier load if ever Moore does sit out.
Gab Banal, Aaron Black and Joseph Yeo are no slouches, either, and just need more playing time to have respectable contributions to the squad.
A win against Canada means that Mighty will head to its blockbuster showdown with South Korea riding on a four-game winning streak.
Can Mighty Sports keep the momentum going or will the youthful Canada side pull off a massive upset?
