HIGHLIGHTS: Philippines vs Chinese Taipei Blue - Jones Cup 2019
MANILA, Philippines – After 6 straight wins in the 41st William Jones Cup, Mighty Sports-Go for Gold is now just one win away from effectively sealing the championship for the second time in 4 years.
However, where that win would come from next will likely determine who will hoist the Jones Cup at the end of the win-based tournament.
If Mighty wins its 7 pm match on Saturday, July 20, against Chinese Taipei Blue, its record would rise to 7-0, and a worst-case scenario would give Mighty a 7-1 record if it drops its final game against Chinese Taipei White.
South Korea, its closest competitor, could only go as high as 7-1, and due to Mighty winning its match against the Koreans, the Philippine bets hold the title tiebreaker.
If Mighty loses against Chinese Taipei Blue, however, it also loses control of its title dreams. In this scenario, the 4-1 Taipei Blue would hold the tiebreaker and could win the title if it sweeps its two remaining games against Jordan and Korea.
This is why Mighty cannot afford to drop its first game against Chinese Taipei Blue. Definitely, coach Charles Tiu knows all about the implications and would let his team know as well.
Renaldo Balkman, Eugene Phelps and the rest of the Mighty imports have long been locked in. The local cast is no slouch, either, as any Filipino is bound to erupt at any given game, including Jeremiah Gray, Mikey Williams, Aaron Black and Joseph Yeo.
Will Mighty get the job done one more time to effectively secure its second Jones Cup in 4 years or will Chinese Taipei Blue complicate things for its own aspirations?
