MANILA, Philippines – Leaving behind their sorry loss against Air21, the Barako Bull Energy Cola can look forward to a Happy New Year as they bounced back strong and overcame Globalport Batang Pier, 108-95, in the PLDT myDSL Philippine Cup on Sunday, December 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Barako Bull used a stellar fourth quarter surge piloted by Denok Miranda to come from behind and nip the Batang Pier.

Fighting tooth-and-nail for much of the second and third periods, Barako opened the payoff period with back-to-back triples from JC Intal and Carlo Lastimosa to turn their three-point 82-79 edge at the end of the third to a quick 9-point advantage, 88-79.

Miranda was a leader for Barako during that final period not just in scoring but also in making things happen for his teammates. Miranda’s pesky defense forced the turnover and subsequent fastbreak points for Willie Miller at the 4:06 mark to make it a 10-point game, 99-89. Miranda paced Barako with 19 points.

Barako Bull went on overdrive with their aggression and made good on their attempts from the stripe as well as found their open guys to bury Globalport deeper to win by a double-digit margin.

Slightly uncharacteristic of them, however, was how Barako incessantly dropped the ball to Dorian Peña under the basket, wrestling for points in the paint, instead of going to their usual three-point shooting to start the game. Peña was a perfect 4-of-4 in the opening canto and went on to finish with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Globalport, on the other hand, excelled on outside shooting early on, riding on the hot shooting of Jay Washington who led Globaport with 30 points, even going 6-of-6 from the field in the first.

Keith Jensen breathed life into the Energy Cola approaching the 3-minute mark of the second period with a one-handed jam off the break, bringing his team to within two, 40-42.

Shortly after, Mark Macapagal swished in a trey to knot things up at 45-all. Denok Miranda then set his team up for a one-point halftime edge, 50-49, with a go-ahead pull-up jumper.

Globalport’s Terrence Romeo and Sol Mercado added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The scores:

Barako Bull (108) – Miranda 19, Pena 15, Pennisi 14, Lastimosa 12, Jensen 11, Isip 10, Intal 9, Miller 7, Macapagal 6, Maierhofer 3, Wilson 2, Buenafe 0.

GlobalPort (95) – Washington 30, Romeo 16, Mercado 12, Garcia 8, Nabong 7, Hayes 6, Yee 4, Chua 4, Salva 4, Lingganay 2, Menk 2, Revilla 0, Salvador 0.
