MANILA, Philippines – This time, the champions returned on a high note.

Unlike in the Philippine Cup, the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers returned from a championship with a dominant triumph.

The back-to-back Governors’ Cup and Philippine Cup champions capitalized on a bad shooting night from the GlobalPort Batang Pier to dispose of them with a 91-75 rout and earn their first win in the 2014 PLDT myDSL Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday, March 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Mixers shook off some rust early in the match when they trailed 20-16 after the first 12 minutes, and got into their offensive groove from the second quarter pouring in 31 points. They never relinquished after that.

GlobalPort was able to come as close as 80-72 with about 5 minutes left in the fourth. But nothing was going well for the Batang Pier as they shot 27-of-62 or 43.5% from the field. Their threes were nowhere to be found as well, going 0-of-17 from long range.

Even Batang Pier import Evan Brock’s 27 points and 28 rebounds was not enough to give coach Pido Jarencio his first win in the PBA.

GlobalPort’s turnovers were also a nightmare for them with 22. San Mig had 21 points off of those. The only department they won significantly was rebounding, where they clobbered the Mixers, 61-44.

Meanwhile, rookie Ian Sangalang led the Mixers with 16 points and 5 boards.

Another rookie strut his stuff towards the end as Justin Melton put the exclamation point on their rousing win with a breakaway reverse jam for his 7th point.

San Mig import James Mays had a 15-point debut together with 6 rebounds.  – Rappler.com
