Two of the country's top collegiate basketball programs asserted their might as the elimination round of the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup continues to wind down

MANILA, Philippines – Two of the country’s top collegiate basketball programs asserted their might on Saturday, May 17 at the Arena in San Juan as the elimination round of the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup continues to wind down.

The reigning 4-time NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions assured themselves of a quarterfinals berth as they extended their win streak to 5 by trouncing the Mapua Cardinals, 80-68.

The Cardinals were no match for the Lions, who tied the FEU Tamaraws for first place in Group B action.

Ola Adeogun was his usual commanding self with 23 points and 12 rebounds as forward Art Dela Cruz and guard Baser Amer provided the necessary support with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Amer also had 7 assists to his name.

San Beda won the battle of the boards convincingly, 47-33, and even moved the ball better with 24 assists compared to Mapua’s 16.

Although they haven’t lost a game yet, head coach Boyet Fernandez was not particularly fond of his team’s 17 turnovers. But he says they continue to pick up lessons for points of improvement each and every game.

“I tell the boys every game is an important game for San Beda,” Fernandez explained how he continues to motivate his team so they don’t get tired of winning. “I told them that just because we’re winning doesn’t mean we should lie low. I told them to push themselves.”

Mapua forward Josan Nimes led the Cardinals with 19 points while Joseph Eriobu added 18.

Mapua remained winless after 4 outings and is sitting in the cellar of their bracket. San Beda, on the other hand, will battle FEU for the top spot on May 31.

UE clobbers JRU

The UAAP’s UE Red Warriors had a relatively easy afternoon as well, speeding past the JRU Heavy Bombers, 99-78, to gain only their first win of the tournament in 3 outings.

While the defending champions took a lopsided victory, the game was marred by sloppiness from both squads.

The Warriors tallied 25 turnovers throughout the contest as JRU came up with an even worse number of 31.

However, UE still had the last laugh since they were able to offset their miserable ball handling with 30 points off the Bombers’ miscues, while their opponents only managed 9 turnover points.

Bannered now by new coach Derrick Pumaren, who replaced Boycie Zamar, UE made sure their first win would not escape them as they kept their starters on the court up until the final two minutes, when they were certain the game was out of reach with a 24-point lead.

Center Charles Mammie from Sierra Leone, who is now playing on his second year, went on a tear with two monster jams as he finished with 15 markers and 6 boards.

Pedrito Galanza had 17 points while guard Roi Sumang pitched in 10 points.

Forward Phillip Mabulac led the Cardinals with 19 points.

With the loss, the Heavy Bombers fell to solo second in Group A at 3-2.

HTC nails lone win over UP

Meanwhile, in the day’s opener for the seniors division, the Holy Trinity College Wildcats of General Santos City came away with a 94-85 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons in Group C.

It was a fitting show of dominance and power for the Wildcats as they ended their preseason campaign on a good note with their first win.

Right from the start there wasn’t much the now 1-3 Maroons could do  when they allowed Holy Trinity to run away with 53 first half points. The Wildcats’ offense was just clicking throughout the game – they made 54% of their field goals and shot 6 triples.

Though UP kept themselves in the game from the free throw line with 20-of-34 makes (HTC only went 8-of-15), they were unable to even set a deadlock let alone grab the lead all game long as Trinity went on cruise control.

Although out-rebounded, 58-48, Trinity made a living on second-chance points (16-4) and turnover points (19-8).

Edson Batiller topscored for the Wildcats with 21 points as Meylan Landicho and Aldrin Yusop added 18 and 14 points, respectively.

For UP, it was Renz Asilum who carried his team again with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Holy Trinity will be leaving Manila with a 1-5 slate. – Rappler.com
