Manila, Philippines – Behind a balanced assault and a second half surge, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals got past the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 81-72, on Wednesday afternoon, July 2, at the San Juan Arena.

John Tayongtong was one of the game’s key performers, putting up 14 markers and six assists for EAC, which also received a combined 27 points from Jack Arquero and freshman Ariel Aguilar.

Cedric Happi also pitched in, registering 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Jerald Serrano had 11 in his NCAA debut.

Fons Saavedra spearheaded the Blazers with 20 markers.

EAC utilized an impressive 33-19 advantage over its opponents in the third canto to pull away with the win.

Back-to-back threes from the Generals place some separation between them and the Blazers, 53-47, with a little over four minutes to go in the third quarter. EAC would continue pushing the pedal, and took advantage of careless CSB turnovers to extend its lead to 12, 66-54, entering the final quarter.

CSB tried to trim the deficit in the final quarter with a couple of Saavedra conversions, but the Generals had an answer for every time their opponents would get close.

With 1:40 remaining in the game, Aguilar converted a tough turn-around jumper to extend his club’s lead to 10, 80-70, and put down the Blazers for good.

The Generals improve to 1-0, and will look to make it two straight wins when they take on Arellano on July 7, Monday. St. Benilde, on the other hand, looks to avoid a losing streak when they battle JRU on the same day.

EAC raced off to an early lead, building a 16-8 lead towards the end of the first quarter. However, CSB used a couple of easy fastbreak opportunities to take the momentum and enter halftime with a two-point edge.
