'Winning a Grand Slam is the thrill of all thrills,' says Tim Cone

MANILA, Philippines – Winning the second Grand Slam of his career during the 39th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), it was no surprise that San Mig Coffee head coach Tim Cone bagged the 2014 PBA Press Corps Coach of the Year Award.

The award, named after legendary coach Virgilio ‘Baby’ Dalupan, the winningest coach in the PBA before Cone surpassed him this past season with his 18 league titles, is Cone’s third recognition. He was also honored with the award during the 1996 season when he achieved his first Grand Slam.

“Winning a Grand Slam is the thrill of all thrills,” the 56-year old American coach said after receiving his award during the awarding ceremonies held Thursday, August 21 at the Richmonde Hotel, Eastwood City in Libis.

“It takes a unique group to win a Grand Slam,” he added.

San Miguel Corporation President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon Ang, who was also honored as Executive of the Year, praised Cone for his contributions to the San Miguel franchise.

“Tim, you are the best coach I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said. “I hope you win another Grand Slam.”

The Executive of the Year award is named after another league legend, the late Danny Floro, who was the owner of two-time Grand Slam champions Crispa Redmanizers.

Apart from Cone and Ang, PBA players were also recognized for their accomplishments throughout the past season.

From Grand Slam team San Mig Coffee, individual awards went to 3 of its top players.

Hustle guy Marc Pingris won the Defensive Player of the Year plum, while guards PJ Simon and Mark Barroca won the Quality Minutes and Order of Merit awards, respectively.

The 41-year old ageless Asi Taulava, who averaged 14.75 points and 11.74 rebounds during the 39th season, took home the well-deserved Comeback Player of the Year award.

Talk ’N Text playmaker and Asia’s best point guard Jayson Castro was awarded Scoring Champion for his 16.78 points per game.

While the All-Rookie Team is comprised of Ginebra big man and 2014 Rookie of the Year Greg Slaughter, San Mig Coffee’s Ian Sangalang and Justin Melton, Globalport’ Terrence Romeo, and Rain or Shine’s Raymond Almazan. – Rappler.com
