Rain or Shine dismantles KIA’s defense in 117-88 rout
Seven guys scored in double figures for the Elasto Painters, who outscored the Sorento in the paint, 56-40, and received 68 points from their bench

MANILA, Philippines – After being unable to find much of an offensive rhythm in their first two games of the 2014-2015 PBA Philippine Cup, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters re-discovered their offensive mojo by treating the defense of PBA expansion team KIA Sorento like it was merely shooting practice.

That was the case on Wednesday, October 29, when ROS improved to 2-1 in the conference by shooting 41-of-69 for 59% from the field and going 10-of-22 for 45% from 3-point range in their easy 117-88 win against KIA, who now drops to 1-2.

“We started the conference slow with our first two games. We’re just trying to regain our chemistry back, we’re just trying to regain our confidence back. This is the best way to do it,” Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao said after the game.

Paul Lee returned after missing his team’s game against Blackwater Elite by putting up 22 points and 4 rebounds and making 4 3-pointers, while Beau Belga had 16 points and 6 rebounds. TY Tang put up 15 markers, while Jeric Teng, Jericho Cruz, and Jervy Cruz each had 12 points.

Seven guys scored in double figures for the Elasto Painters, who outscored the Sorento in the paint, 56-40, and received 68 points from their bench.

Reil Cervantes and Alvin Padilla had 18 and 17, respectively, for KIA, who played their second straight game without playing-coach Manny Pacquiao.

“We’re lucky that Congressman Manny Pacquiao is not playing, because he’s just an inspiration to his team,” Guiao said about Pacman, who missed the match due to preparations for his upcoming fight against Chris Algieri in Macau in November.

“The first time he played they won, so it’s good for all of us that (he didn’t play.)”

KIA shot only 38 from the field and went a pedestrian 58% (18-of-31) from the free throw line. The Sorento didn’t lead the entire game and trailed by as much as 31.

“KIA, even Blackwater, they’re not weak teams as evidence by the last two games,” said Guiao, whose team’s two wins this conference have come against the expansion franchises of the 2014-2015 PBA season.

“They could steal some wins… these teams are stronger than they look.”

ROS played their third straight game without Chris Tiu, while Ryan Arana missed his first game of the season. Both were inactive due to injured hamstrings.

“Ryan should be able to play the next game, Chris in about a week or so. We can’t wait to be complete and play as hard as we can,” said Guiao.

After going multiple stretches without converting on offense in their last win against the Elite, Rain or Shine came out of the gates in the first quarter on fire against KIA, converting eight points in a span of a minute and 21 seconds while limiting their opponents to without a basket during that span.

Halfway through the first quarter, Tang completed a 3-point play that was followed by a 3-ball from rookie Jericho Cruz. Not long after, Tang hit his second 3-pointer of the first period to up his scoring output at that time to 9 and give the Elasto Painters a 25-13 lead.

ROS remained hot on offense the rest of the period and entered the second quarter ahead, 36-25, after going 10-of-13 from the field in the first 12 minutes. KIA cut their opponents’ lead to nine in difference stretches in the second and third quarters, but could not build any momentum on the defensive side of the floor, which played the biggest factor in their loss.

Game notes: Rain or Shine’s 36 points in the first quarter was the most by any team in a first quarter in the 2014-2015 PBA Philippine Cup, and tied the most points scored in any quarter by any team in the conference; a technical foul was called on Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao in the third quarter for complaining to the referees for an offensive foul that was called on Belga.
