Gilas makes FIBA Asia semis
MANILA, Philippines -- El Granada finally exploded.
Gary David fired a tournament-high 22 points to lead Gilas Pilipinas to an easy 88-58 destruction of Kazakhstan to advance to the semifinals of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship on Friday, August 9 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
David, who has struggled throughout the tourney, exploded with 3 straight triples in the opening quarter before helping the Philippines pull away in the 4th as the home team wowed the wild and roaring crowd of 17, 273 at the venue.
Tomorrow, August 10, Gilas will face the winner of the Qatar-Korea matchup for a finals seat and a slot to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
Qatar faces Korea right after this game.
Jayson Castro contributed 13 points and 4 assists, Japeth Aguilar impressed with 11 points, 9 rebounds and two blocks and Gabe Norwood made all of his attempts to finish with 10 as the Philippines finally allowed the injured Marcus Douthit to get some rest.
Douthit had 5 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan falls to the classification round and will battle the loser of the Qatar-Korea game.
The Central Asian nation was led by Dmitriy Klimov, who drained 4 3-pointers and ended up with 14 points.
