Powerhouse USA lands in Group D of FIBA women's World Cup draw
MANILA, Philippines - Defending Olympic and FIBA World gold medalists USA landed in Group D in the official draw for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women on Sunday, March 15 (Manila time) held in Istanbul, Turkey.
The United States will join Serbia, China, and Angola in the group.
Host nation Turkey is drawn in Group B with France, Canada, and Mozambique. In Group C are Australia, Belarus, Cuba, and Korea.
2010 runner-up Czech Republic meanwhile is in Group A with Brazil, Spain, and Japan.
It will the 17th staging of the biennial meet which will take place in the cities of Ankara and Istanbul from September 27 to October 5.
Reigning champions USA automatically qualified via winning the 2012 London Olympics. They are also the defending titlists in this event after going undefeated in the 2010 games in Czech Republic.
Expected to lead the heavy favorites are WNBA superstars like reigning Finals MVP Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Elena Delle-Donne, Tina Charles, Tamika Catchings and Sylvia Fowles.
Brazil and Australia are tagged as contenders as well, having experienced WNBA players suiting up. Erika De Souza leads the Latin American nation while Olympians Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage banner the Oceania-based country. - Rappler.com
