Alapag ‘honored’ to be named to FIBA players’ commission
The recently retired Alapag will be working with former NBA star Vlade Divac, who will chair the newly inaugurated commission

MANILA, Philippines — Former captain and current assistant coach for the men’s national basketball team Jimmy Alapag will represent the Philippines in a different capacity at the International Basketball Federation as he was appointed to the FIBA Players’ commission for the 2014-2019 term.

The recently retired Alapag will be working with former NBA star Vlade Divac, who will chair the newly inaugurated commission.

“I’m very honored and excited to be chosen to represent our country with FIBA,” the 37-year old told Rappler. “I’m looking forward to the experience.”

The 5-foot-9 veteran guard competed for the Philippines during the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain and had an unforgettable performance as he led the nationals to its first World Cup win against Senegal.

The former PBA Most Valuable Player then hung up his sneakers on January 9 and has since moved on to a new role as team manager for Talk ‘N Text

“I don’t know the exact details of my role with the Players’ Commission, but I should know more in the coming days,” Alapag said.

According to a Philippine basketball federation statement, the players’ commission aims to “study issues relating to players of all age groups, propose to the Central Board measures deemed necessary to improve the conditions of players, make recommendations on practices or activities likely to be affecting the interests of players, and provide feedback on and advice on possible improvements to the various competitions of FIBA.”

Alapag’s appointment comes just months after Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan was also elected to the FIBA Central Board.

Alapag joins two other fellow Filipinos in serving in the International Basketball Federation.

FIBA previously selected orthopedic surgeon Dr. Raul Canlas to the FIBA Medical Commission and SBP consultant Atty. Edgar Francisco to the FIBA Legal Commission.

“We are very proud of Jimmy. When FIBA asked for nominees to its Players Commission, we had no hesitation in nominating him,” said SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios in a statement.

“He definitely will make his country proud and we are confident he will make positive contributions in the work of the Commission for the Players’ benefit.” – Rappler.com
