PH stuns 6th-ranked Brazil in 3x3 World Cup opener
BULACAN, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas overpowered Brazil in a 15-7 upset win at the start of its campaign in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2018 on Saturday, June 9, at the Philippine Arena.
Stanley Pringle, Troy Rosario and Roger Pogoy scored 4 points each as the Filipinos stunned the tournament's 6th seed.
In the last 5:45 minutes of the game, Brazil tried to stage a late run with 3 straight points that cut the lead to 5, 11-6, but the Filipinos arrested the rally.
Rosario sparked the Philippines’ offense in the last 2:47 minutes of the game and Pringle’s back-to-back layups sealed the win.
The Philippines will face 11th seeded Mongolia on the same day at 6:40pm.
“I think that’s a very good start for the team,” said Gilas 3x3 head coach Ronnie Magsanoc. "Hopefully, when Mongolia comes in at around 6, the boys will be ready once again to compete until the end."
PHILIPPINES 15 — Pogoy 4, Pringle 4, Rosario 4, Standhardinger 3.
BRAZIL 7 — Sarmento 4, Soriani 2, Evangelista 1, Silva 0.
