Jokic to suit up for Serbia in FIBA World Cup – report
MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas' group of near death in the 2019 FIBA World Cup just got a lot more deadlier.
That is after Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic confirmed he will see action in the quadrennial showpiece for Serbia, a team the Philippines is bunched with in Group D.
"I'm very pleased with everything I did in the NBA last season. I had a great year in which I performed at All-Star and was selected in the All-NBA First Team," he told Serbian news site Tanjug.
"For me, the crown of this whole season would represent a medal. I am sure that the Serbian national team can win at the World Cup in China, and I am fully prepared to do my best to achieve this goal."
The seven-foot big man is coming off his best season in the NBA, leading the Nuggets to the Western Conference semifinals before they bowed out to the Portland Trail Blazers in 7 games.
He averaged career-highs of 20.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.4 blocks en route to being selected to the All-Star Game and the All-NBA team for the first time.
Aside from Serbia, the Philippines will also face Italy and Angola in the first round of the World Cup that kicks off on August 31.
On Thursday, Australia also announced that Philadephia 76ers star Ben Simmons will headline an NBA player-dominated national squad in the World Cup. – Rappler.com
