Gilas Pilipinas falls to Angola in 5th straight tuneup loss
The Philippine men's national basketball team continues to struggle to achieve victories leading up to the 2014 FIBA World Cup, losing to Angola

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men’s national basketball team continues to struggle to achieve victories leading up to the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas lost anew on Friday morning, August 22, falling prey to Angola, 83-74.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Philippine team, which suffered defeats at the hands of France, Australia, Ukraine, and Basque prior to Friday’s matchup.

Gilas got off to a good start, leading by six in the early goings of the game, 8-2. Angola, though, bounced back to tie the matchup at 17 entering the second period.

In the second quarter, Angola managed to outscore the Philippines by nine, 26-17, making the count 43-34 at halftime.

Coach Chot Reyes’ troops opened the second half by scoring the first two baskets and got within five, 53-48.

However, their opponents countered by ripping off a 9-0 run, which helped Angola take a 64-50 advantage at the end of the third period. (RELATED: Facing Gilas Pilipinas: Senegal)

The Philippines didn’t give in, as they managed to put up nine quick points to open the final quarter of play, 66-59.

Nevertheless, Angola seized control once again by scoring eight straight to make the count 72-59.

Angola never looked back, and cruised off to an easy win.

Gilas Pilipinas will look to bounce back when they take on Dominican Republic in another exhibition match on Monday, August 25.

On Wednesday, August 20, Dominican Republic lost to Team USA, 105-62, in a tune-up game in New York.

NBA swingman Francisco Garcia leads the Dominicans, while Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford is not going to be in action for his country in the World Cup as he recuperates from a torn pectoral muscle he suffered during the 2013-2014 NBA season.

The World Cup kicks off on Saturday, August 30.
