MANILA, Philippines – The pool of players for Sinag Pilipinas who will compete in the 2015 Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament will be announced by the end of the week, according to Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin and SBP Executive Director Butch Antonio.
The SEABA tourney will take place from April 27-May 1 and will be a qualifier to enter the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in September.
Speaking to reporters, Baldwin and Antonio said that try-outs for the team already started on Monday, March 2, with notable collegiate basketball players such as Kiefer Ravena, Mac Belo, and Jeron Teng, among others, present.
“It was very positive, a lot of talent walked into the gym,” Baldwin said, without revealing their thoughts about some of the hopefuls after the first session.
A second practice/try-out is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3.
A pool of 15 players for the team will be named by the end of the week, with the lineup eventually being cut down to 12 prior to the tournament. Formal practices, scheduled four times a week, will begin next week.
Baldwin pointed out that chemistry, competitiveness, and efficiency will be key in choosing the roster for his national squad. “I intend to select the best team,” he said.
Gilas assistant coach Jimmy Alapag, FEU head coach Nash Racela, Mike Oliver, and Josh Reyes are all part of Baldwin’s staff.
The Sinag team is also expected to participate in the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) this June in Singapore.
Baldwin’s goal is to win gold in both SEABA and SEA Games competitions. – Rappler.com
