'He's being a great role model for the younger players here,' says the Brooklyn Nets big man during his visit to the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Brook Lopez of the Brooklyn Nets thinks Kobe Paras serves as a “great role model” for other Filipinos to chase their dreams.

The 7-foot center, who is now the Nets’ all-time leading scorer, commended the 19-year-old Paras, a local high school standout who is currently working for a shot at the NBA as he plays for schools in the US.

“It’s great to see guys like Kobe, playing in America. He’s being a great role model for the younger players here,” said Lopez, a one-time NBA All-Star, who returned to Manila for the first time since 2012 to promote his partnership with insurance company AXA Philippines.

Paras recently transferred to Cal State Northridge after one season at Creighton University.

The son of former PBA star Benjie Paras is set to play for the Philippines again in the FIBA 3×3 World Championship this month in Nantes, France.

Paras, an athletic 6-foot-6 swingman notorious for his leaping ability and impressive dunks, will team up with local collegiate stars Jeron Teng and Kiefer Ravena as well as veteran 3×3 and PBA big man JR Quiñahan.

Lopez also expressed confidence that Philippine national basketball teams can go as far as the Olympics.

“I’m confident the team will be competitive in the FIBAs and they’ll make the Olympics,” he said. — Rappler.com
