PBA All-Stars dare coaches to join dance-off
The All-Star coaches don’t usually partake in the annual dance-off, but this year may be different

MANILA, Philippines – Each year for the PBA All-Star Weekend, one of the most anticipated events is the dance-off right before the All-Star Game.

All-Star players from both sides, or sometimes the national teams in years where they compete against PBA favorites, turn the hardcourt into a dance floor for the quality entertainment of fans watching professional basketball players grind and dance to the beat.

This year, though, the players want to spice things up.

“They said that this it’s gonna be a new format this year,” South team starter Joe Devance issued the dare during the All-Star press conference Thursday, August 4 at Hotel Novotel.

“Yeah, I made this rule up and the coaches, they’re both gonna be in the dance as well.”

“I heard coach Yeng is a good dancer but I don’t know. I haven’t seen him,” he added.

The All-Star coaches don’t usually partake in the dance-off and are quite content laughing at their players from the sidelines. But it looks like North team coach Yeng Guiao, champion of this season’s Commissioner’s Cup, and South team coach Leo Austria, champion of this year’s Philippine Cup, will have little choice.

Mahal talent fee ko (My talent fee is expensive),” a chuckling Austria promptly reacted to Devance’s challenge.

At that, North starter Marc Pingris floated the idea of increasing the P100,000 cash prize with the addition of the coaches. Incumbent league chairman Robert Non then hinted it was possible.

“We can increase, there’s no problem with that,” he said in Filipino.

“The highlight of the All-Star Game is the dance-off and now we have the coaches,” said a very excited Asi Taulava.

Devance is expected to lead the South team’s choreography once again in an attempt at back-to-back wins. Devance’s upside down twerking was the highlight that sealed the deal for the South last year in Puerto Princesa.

“We’ll talk with the rest of the team, come up with some great ideas. James (Yap) and Asi (Taulava) are great dancers. We’ve got some great dancers here,” Devance said before trash talking the North. “There’s nobody over there that can dance.”

Mark Caguioa of the North responded, saying they may just change it all up completely and pushed last year’s All-Star Game MVP Terrence Romeo to the spotlight.

Baka ibahin namin yung amin baka instead of a dance we’re going to sing. Singer daw si Terrence (We might change ours and instead of a dance we’re going to sing. Terrence is a singer),” Caguioa said.

Hindi niyo alam si Terrence nung nasa Gilas kami ang galing kumanta (You don’t know this but when we were at Gilas Terrence was a really good singer),” Pingris chimed in, egging on Romeo to show off his singing skills.

Romeo insisted everyone wait for Sunday, August 7, saying they’ll prepare their performance.

Oo nga wag ngayon wag ngayon, baka ma-scout (Yeah not now, not now, we might get scouted),” Pingris quipped. – Rappler.com
