The 40-year-old says he has not yet decided whether to extend or end his storied career with the Gin Kings

MANILA, Philippines – As Barangay Ginebra basks in the limelight again after 8 years, the future remains uncertain for one of its iconic and trusted veterans Jayjay Helterbrand.

The 40-year-old guard, who became only the third player in PBA history to become champion at that age, said he does not have any plans just yet as far as extending or ending his storied career with the Gin Kings.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m just going to talk to the management, the coaching staff but I’m just going to enjoy this first. We’re not thinking about that right now,” said Helterbrand, whose contract expired in August, after Ginebra’s Game 6 championship victory.

“We’ll just see. I really don’t know.”

Helterbrand has played with Ginebra his entire PBA career since he was a direct hire in 2000 and he previously expressed this season would be his last. He has since formed a lethal backcourt tandem with Mark Caguioa and their partnership has become one of the most memorable in the league, sharing 4 championships together.

Helterbrand has been the fire that lit up Ginebra in this tough series against Meralco. He lit up the Gin Kings in an inspired Game 4 performance on his birthday to level the series at two games apiece.

It sparked a 3-game winning run all the way to the franchise’s first championship in 8 years.

“Miracle after miracle and I give it all to God, a lot was because of God,” he said.

Helterbrand reflected on his journey from being counted out because of the years in his legs, to showing he’s still got it, climbing up the ladder and cutting down the championship net along the way.

“I mean, it’s tough because especially I was just called on all of a sudden, it’s part of being a professional,” he explained.

“You have to be ready you have to not be afraid of the big moment, and be able to help your team whenever they need you and that’s what it takes to win championships – to have each other’s backs and that’s what happened this series.”

The new PBA season will begin on November 20. – Rappler.com
