Parks delivers at crunchtime as Blackwater noses out Ginebra in OT
MANILA, Philippines – Blackwater survived another overtime, this time slaying a giant in Barangay Ginebra with a thrilling 108-107 win in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, May 24.
Ray Parks, who missed the entire Philippine Cup, proved to be worth the wait after scoring 10 of his 28 points in the extra period as the Elite remained unbeaten in two games.
Playing against the defending champion Gin Kings, Parks showed no rookie jitters by draining two triples in overtime before icing the free throws that made it a four-point lead late and virtually sealed the win for his side.
Ginebra managed to trim its deficit to a whisker off a Justin Brownlee three-pointer and had a chance to steal the game, but Scottie Thompson badly airballed his game-winning trey from the corner.
Parks also finished with 3 rebounds and 2 steals, while import Alex Stepheson delivered another 28 points to go with 25 rebounds in the win.
Mac Belo chipped in 20 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals, while Mike Digregorio and Allein Maliksi had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Blackwater.
Brownlee saw his career-high tying 44 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists go to waste as Ginebra started its title-retention campaign on the wrong foot.
Greg Slaughter was the only other player in double figures in the losing cause with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
