MANILA, Philippines – Calvin Abueva has been fined by Phoenix following his on-court incident with Ray Parks’ girlfriend in a 103-98 win over Blackwater in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday, May 31. 

The Fuel Masters said in a statement released on Saturday, June 1, that they would deduct P20,000 from Abueva’s salary after cursing and making lewd gestures towards Parks’ girlfriend, actress Maika Rivera. 

Parks claimed Abueva motioned like he’s jerking off, flashed the dirty finger, and called Rivera a “b**ch.” (READ: Parks says Abueva cursed, made obscene gestures towards his girlfriend)

Abueva has since defended his actions, saying Rivera started it all by saying “f**k you” to him when he was fouled out late in the victory. (READ: Abueva defends action towards Parks’ girlfriend: ‘Ako ba nauna?’)

However, the Fuel Masters – while saying they “stand and support” Abueva – said thier star forward should have kept his cool. 

“[W]hile they may have been provocation per his claims, he could have exercised more prudence and patience in dealing with it moreso a female was involved,” the Fuel Masters said. 

Phoenix also called on fans to be more mindful in supporting their favorite players and teams. 

“While PBA players are in the nature of public figures, we also ask the fans to also be more circumspect in cheering for their respective teams and players to prevent this incident from happening again.” 

The deducted salary, the Fuel Masters said, will be donated to a charity chosen by Rivera or by the PBA. 

“We wish to move forward from this regrettable incident which we believed were caused by our emotional attachment to the sport we love most,” Phoenix concluded.
